With Truth Comes Understanding

Grooming is not a feeling; it is a process. It is a deliberate pattern of behavior in which an adult creates dependency, compliance, and silence in a minor through a combination of attention, isolation, fear, and psychological conditioning. It is training a child to produce the desired result, and only that result, of the adult/groomer/trainer. Every expert who studies child exploitation recognizes these same stages used by the predators: identifying vulnerability, building trust, creating dependence (emotional and/or material dependence), isolating the child from outside support, instilling fear, and gradually normalizing the abnormal.

When I was 15 years old, I was the target of this process and did not have the knowledge, language, nor maturity to understand it, avoid it or take appropriate action. I was dealing with an adult who controlled the environment, controlled the narrative, and controlled the consequences. I was dealing with a predator; someone we do not know how to deal with even today as adults. The imbalance was total, he was dominant, I was subservient. My world narrowed to what he allowed me to see, and my choices narrowed to only what choices he allowed me to believe were real choices. This is how grooming works, not through violence alone, but through the shaping of a child’s reality until resistance feels impossible and danger feels normal. This context does not erase the harm that occurred and does not remove my responsibility for the choices I made, but it does explain the position I was in as a minor and the psychological forces acting on me long before the public ever heard my name.

For almost 53 years, over half a century, the public story has focused on the outcome of events without acknowledging the developmental reality of how a child ends up in the orbit of a predatory adult. I share this deeper truth, not to shift blame, but to offer clarity to those who genuinely want to understand. People need, and deserve, an accurate picture of what happened, not the myth, not the headlines, but the human reality. People need to see what can happen to any child, yes, even your own child, that comes under the influence of a predator. I cannot change the dark past, but I can shed light upon it. Please pay attention as this could happen to any child. Only armed with truth and knowledge can you have any chance of saving your children, our children.

No, I cannot change the past, but I can grow from it. To grow straight and true there must be honesty. It is too late to save the 15-year-old Wayne, but fostering understanding gleaned from his truths may save other children. If understanding grows from truth, then sharing my truth has purpose.
