A pet peeve, and something I feel is important to both doing time well and in keeping up with a fast moving world: music. Guys in here tend to listen to only the music that was popular at the time of their arrest. They become dated and out of step with society after years, even decades, of prison. In short, all they will listen to is classic rock, golden oldies, etc…caveman music! Walking down the run leaves one moving in and out of different eras easy to guess the age of the cell’s inhabitants.
Since music, at least for me, is almost a constant, I believe we need to be aware of and listen to the day’s popular music of whatever genre. Music teaches us today’s attitudes, slang, fashions, trends, and interests. Music will keep us in touch with a rapidly changing world that we will not be aware of if we remain stuck in bygone times. I preach this to the guys around me who reply that new music just sounds like “noise”… they sound just like their father.
